After their first visit in 2002 to Las Lagunas,
Nicaragua, Linda Weber and Judy Miller established a scholarship
program for the youth of that community. Since their free schooling
in their one-room classroom ended after sixth grade they wanted to
allow those motivatead and able to continue in the secondary school
in the nearby city of Boaco.
In 2003 five girls and four boys enrolled in secondary and one young man
entered technical school with our financial assistance. Since that time
we have been able to provide funds for 38 to continue their education.
At present we have 21 in secondary and 4 in the university (nursing, pharmacy,
pre-law, and veterinary medicine).
For this school year, the montly cost per student in
secondary school is about $25.
This includes monthly fees, books/materials, lunch, and transportation. |
| For more information or to learn how to contribute,
please contact Linda Weber. |
The organization receives emails from the
students as well as reports from the Wisconsin
Nicaragua Partners office in Managua. Some of their comments are as follows: |
"I am writing to thank you for your
help and support to study Corte and Confeccion (INATEC). I want
to continue studying to move forward and to be able to earn a living
in the future. I am very grateful for your effort." Iveth
Guadalupe Sarabia
"My (high School) graduation was last December 3. I was thinking of you
and wishing you were here to share in my happiness. I thank you for supporting
me during my studies in secondary school. Now I am one more graduate in Nicaragua." Jose
Luis Amador Sanchez
"Without your help I would not be able to better myself. My economic situation
has not been easy because I have not had parental support. My mother left me
with my grandmother when I was small. Now I am taking advantage of the secondary
opportunity and the monthly (financial) help to study." Ana Yolexis Rizo
All this would not have been possible without the help from our friends
and those interested in making a difference in the future of these young
people and the community of Las Lagunas, Nicaragua. |

PEACE
The Granny Peace Brigade
"When a group of 18 women ages 59 to 91, many of them grandmothers, tried to enlist in the United States military on October 17, 2005, The Granny Peace Brigade was born. They asked to enlist in order to replace grandchildren who had been deployed in Iraq unnecessarily. They were denied access and were arrested and jailed. After a six-day trial, they were acquitted of all charges for their non-violent protest. That was the just beginning."
Voices for Creative Nonviolence
"Kathy Kelly, nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize, heads up this organization whose purpose is to nonviolently resist war. Members of Voices for Creative Nonviolence have focused on Iraq since the 1990’s, going as far as to fly into Iraq before various bombing campaigns to be in solidarity with innocent civilians who are unable to flee violence and who most often bear the brunt of war."

School of Americas
SOA Watch
Lee este articulo en español.
"SOA Watch is an independent organization that seeks to close the US Army School of the Americas, under whatever name it is called, through vigils and fasts, demonstrations and nonviolent protest, as well as media and legislative work.
On November 16, 1989, six Jesuit priests, their co-worker and her teenage daughter were massacred in El Salvador. A U.S. Congressional Task Force reported that those responsible were trained at the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
In 1990 SOA Watch began in a tiny apartment outside the main gate of Ft. Benning. While starting with a small group, SOA Watch quickly drew upon the knowledge and experience of many in the U.S. who had worked with the people of Latin America in the 1970's and 80's.
Today, the SOA Watch movement is a large, diverse, grassroots movement rooted in solidarity with the people of Latin America. The goal of SOA Watch is to close the SOA and to change U.S. foreign policy in Latin America by educating the public, lobbying Congress and participating in creative, nonviolent resistance. The Pentagon has responded to the growing movement and Congress' near closure of the SOA with a PR campaign to give the SOA a new image. In an attempt to disassociate the school with its horrific past, the SOA was renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation in January of 2001." |
